Whether the bread you eat is gluten-free, vegan or otherwise, baked flour can be really hard on our bodies. The process of baking is drying and hardening and it can do the same thing to our bodies. This is especially true if the bread is toasted.

However, if you steam bread it becomes softer and more hydrated. It’s easier on your body and easier to digest.

I know this might sound weird. I was a little unsure when I first heard about it, but it totally works. If you start with good quality bread, it will not get soggy or fall apart. It just becomes soft and yummy and very satisfying. Here is how you do it:

Steamed Bread

Start with good quality sourdough, whole grain bread. Sprouted grain works, too. Heat some water in a pot with a steamer basket. When the water is at a low boil, place the bread in one slice at a time. Steam for about 30 seconds or until the slice is nice and soft. Make sure the water isn’t boiling up to touch the bread or it will get soggy. Remove from pot and serve plain or topped with your favorite topping. We love carrot jam or onion butter.

I hope you try it!!
